The Sacred Spoils

In 410 AD, Rome was sacked by the Visigoths under the leadership of their king Alaric I. Over three long days, they stripped it of the wealth it had taken eight hundred years to accumulate. Then they set off south, hoping to sail to North Africa to establish a homeland of their own.

It wasn’t to be.

Thwarted by storms and the onset of winter, they abandoned their plans and turned back. Then Alaric himself then fell sick and died. Outside the Calabrian city of Cosenza, the Visigoths forced their virtual army of captive slaves to divert the river Busento so that they could bury him beneath it, along with an astonishing quantity of looted Roman spoils – including who could say what sacred treasures. Then they restored the river to its former course and put the slaves to death, that the secret of its location might die with them.

Countless efforts have been made over the centuries since to find Alaric’s tomb and its marvellous contents – including by Heinrich Himmler on behalf of the German Reich. Yet no trace of it has ever been found.

Not until now.

Historian Carmen Nero and conman Cesco Rossi join together in an unlikely partnership in a race against the clock as well as the Mafia, the Israeli special forces and a gang of German neo-Nazis to find the tomb.
